Today, I've made another simple 2D sprite, this time it's a standard q3/ql portal.

I thought of this neat idea today while making these sprites. I want to make a short quake-ish 2D platformer game and attach it to the movie. I already saw some tutorials on youtube. It might learn something useful and have some fun at the same time.:)

But don't worry, I'm still working on the movie. This portal will be used in the intro, and I've also made a background but I won't be sharing that with you. You'll see it in the movie. I'll be making updates more frequently now, so you're welcome to check for news every now and then. :)

Today I've made a retro 2D sprite of the sarge model. I'll use it in the intro. Made an forum avatar from it for cityy.

I don't have much experience with pixel art, and I think it came out pretty decently. Tomorrow I'll try putting it into vegas:)

Few days ago I resumed work on the movie. It's almost christmas time and I have a lot of different stuff to do as well but I try to spend my free time on movie making.

I didn't start putting the actual movie together yet, but I'm getting closer to that. Yesterday I've put all of the frags I've got into vegas and rendered previews. If put together these previews make up to about 10 minutes of footage. Of course I won't use all of that. In the end the movie will be somewhere between 4 and 6 minutes, or at least that's what I'm planning. I want to keep it short and interesting. Long movies tend to get boring after a while and I'd rather see people complaining that it was too short than the opposite.

I'll probably go back to wolfcam later on to render a recam or two for appropriate moments in the movie.

Also, still not 100% sure about music, and it's been over a year now that I'm thinking about it. heh. oh btw while talking about dilemmas. I have no freaking idea how to name it. Hopefully I'll think of something while editting.

When will it be ready? In 2012 for sure.

Well, I haven't posted for a while, the reason behind that is simple. For now, I've lost motivation to work on my current project. It doesn't mean that I'm dropping it. The release is postponed and that's it.
Right now I'm learning 3D modelling in ZBrush. It's a great tool and after learning it I will be able to use it to improve my quake videos as well as start making my own 3d models and animation (with some additional software). I really want to get into this kind of stuff and express myself.
Quake videos have a very niche audience, whereas CG art scene is huge but at the same time very demanding (almost as demanding as ESR users ;))
So yeah, apart from my quake vids, expect some 3d content from me in the future.

Wooosh, it's been a month since my last post and I didn't work on the movie too much during this period.

But it's not that bad. Today I finished capturing the footage. I wanted to start working with vegas, but I encountered some problems, I'll deal with them tomorrow, probably will have to reinstall.

I want to render a preview off all of the frags and see about long much I can do with them (movie duration). I focus on the content, and I rejected so many frags already, damn.

Not sure if my post is making much sense, it's pretty late and I'm tired as hell.

The Afterspray - summary

On 26th of August 2010, exactly a year ago, I released my last movie - The Afterspray. So far it's my most successful one. Let me give you guys some numbers. Over the past year it accumulated over 32000 views on youtube.com and over 18000 views on own3d.tv, that equals over 50000 views in total and counting.

The number of downloads isn't as big but considering that not everyone is collecting quake movies and, sadly, people tend to watch only the stream, which is totally not the same thing as watching it from your hdd, but almost 2000 downloads, which makes 5 downloads per day on average, is enough to make me happy. :)

The movie was posted on various sites in many languages and most of the comments were positive. There also was a little bit of constructive criticism and I'll use it while editing my current project, which, by the way, will be very different from afterspray, which I made thinking about making something that the community will like, this around time it'll be about using an original idea/theme for the movie that I thought it would be cool to work on.

Anyway, if you haven't seen The Afterspray yet, or you watched it a long time ago, it's a nice opportunity to watch it again :)

Capturing footage!

Two days ago I finalized some ql config releated stuff, yesterday I cleaned up 100 gigs from my HDD and today I've began capturing footage:) Already captured all the frags that I rated 10/10 and half way through the 9's. Things are going super fast :)

Oh, btw according to my flag counter, yesterday my blog hit 1337 unique visitors w00t!

Pretty cool I must admit. Anyway, I found a nice blog with music that will fit into the movie, so yeah a lot of listening again:) The music that I use in my videos is really important to me.

Expect more blog post in the near future :)

Three dee!

Hello there, it's been a while since my last blog post. Suprisingly now that I have a lot of free time I lack motivation to work on the movie. Some days are exceptions though and I'm close to starting capturing footage. Before that I have to finalize custom stuff, like the hud or in game billboards. At first I didn't have a slightest clue how to make a hud, but thanks to http://visualhud.pk69.com/ it became childs play. Since the hud I'll use will have a custom font / icons, I had to go through the hassle of locating the responsible files in the ql .pk3's. If anyone is interested I might share my knowladge about it later on.

Meanwhile I found and fixed some minor flaws in the cfg and still, as always till the last minute, triend to find a perfect song(s?) for the movie. That's a really hard task considering that the music genre is really niche this time and I'm sure a lot of people will really hate it only because of the music. It will really fit the theme of the movie and there's no turning back now. At least it will be original. :)

Oh yeah as the title of this blog post says I'm starting to learn 3D modeling and animation. I got myself ZBrush and 3Ds max and some ebooks about them. So yeah, if I'll work hard I might learn something and use it in my movies, and more!:) Something to look forward to.

Uh, I'm pretty sure a lot of people is already dead tired of waiting for this movie to be released, well I'm really sorry but I'm a normal human and I also have other things to do then just dwell in front of the screen, also I don't want to rush it. So yeah, it'll be released when it's done.

Today is my last day of work, actually, I'm writing this post from a PC of a friendly local worker, there's a badass laser right next to me, cutting shapes from metal plates.

So yeah, later today I'll have to clean up the dorm and pack my stuff, my father will pick me up in the evening.

Yeeeeah, vacations! Finally a lot of time to focus on the movie. You're probably wondering how's the movie going, and well, it's going slow. Recently I've upgraded wolfcam to 8.3 and noticed this nifty little command that let's you render footage at higher res then your screen supports, so yeah probably the highest res version will be 1080p but I don't think that it's gonna be the 'main version' what I mean is that the size of frag messages and stuff will be adjusted to the 720p version. I also worked a bit on custom content, like the ingame ads, hud etc - stuff that I have to finish before I start capturing footage.

Recently a few nice movies popped up on ESR, I was envious of zeroql's movie crisp and clear quality so I asked him about it, he gave me a link to a youtube tutorial for ultra HD movies or something, heh, to be honest I expected something more than that, like megui presets, bitrate or something, but it's fine as long as I'll get the desired quality :)

In-game ads and stuff

Today I was playing around with quakelive's insides, I always wondered what's the path to the in-game billboard ads. For anyone interested, they're in pak00 and the path is "textures/ad_content", insides there's ad1x1.jpg (256x256), ad2x1.jpg (512x256 - the typical big billboard), ad4x1.jpg (1024x256) ad8x1.jpg (1024x128) and adbrightoverlay.png which is present on space map billboards (special effect thingy, cba to explain). This will be my first movies with custom ads, and that will most probably be it when it comes to custom stuff, I'm not a big fan of these cpma weapon effects and particles, sorry.

cfg, codecs and quality

Today I was messing around with compression and quality. I've finally set up a nice in-game configuration and I'll be uploading a quality preview to youtube soon (download link as well). I'm thinking about making high and low quality versions. The high quality version would be 720p at 50fps, right now I can't render 1080p videos, would need a new monitor. I'm not sure about the low quality version yet, probably also 720p but 30fps.

There's still a lot to do and hopefully I'll find the motivation.

Yesterday, I worked out a decent movie config on wolfcam. Updated MeGui and noticed that I have to download some presets. I've also noticed that I have some demos that I didn't cut last time. After a while I got bored. :<

Today after work I was too tired to do anything with the demos.

I'm pretty sure everyone who has sent me demos is getting impatient by now. I didn't get to work on the movie yet, BUT! I'm almost done with exams and stuff@uni. Since the 1st of July I'll be working in the weekdays from 7am to 3pm, but don't worry I'll have time for movie making since unlike university, I won't have any 'homework'. So yeah, starting on July the 1st I'll be movie making on full speed. Expect updates, teasers and such.

Oh yeah, btw, I applied to a 2nd course on uni, and guess what, it's about computer animation, movies and montage. :> Perfectly fits my interests. I hope, I'll manage two courses simultaneously, we'll see :)

Slow, slow, super slow

Yeah things aren't going as fast as I'd like them to. I really have a shitload of stuff to do for uni and on top of that I had some personal things happening which surely didn't motivate me to work on the movie.

Since I've already seen and rated all the demos, it pretty much comes down to capturing and putting everything together.

When I started working on this movie I thought to myself 'Ok, I'll work an hour or two on the movie everyday during weekdays and some more on the weekends and it'll be done in no time!' - but now I've realized that I can't work like that, I can't split my attention between movie making, uni and personal life, so to work on the movie I have to really focus on it. I won't have much time to spare until July, and that's when I'll be able to focus solely on the movie.

Also, I'm not gonna accept anymore demos, I think I have enough, or at least I hope so. I'll do my best. Oh and btw, I'll be working on another movie this summer, I'm probably even more excited about it than I am on my current project. heh anyways, probably gonna take a while before I post something again, but don't worry, once I'll get to work seriously on the movie, I'll make up for it.

Things are going very slow recently, I don't have much spare time. When I do have a free moment and the will to work - I re-watch all the demos and rate them, later on it will help my greatly with arranging the frags around. I want to focus on the flow of the movie.

In a couple of hours I'll go catch the train home. Gonna stay there for Easter.. So yeh, happy easter guys.

Just catched up with all the demos I've received so far. From 1,8 GB I rejected 1,49 GB and accepted 325MB.. and believe it or not, I still want more.

More outstanding frags of course, not average, common frags. I'll be working on a trailer to encourage players to send in more frags, I'll announce a deadline once the trailer is released.

Few days ago I received my additional cooling unit so high temperatures aren't a problem anymore. I'm really happy with it.

You might think that I'm really slow with this, but I have other stuff to worry about too, movie making is nothing more than a hobby, and I don't get paid for it. This semester at uni is really tough, I have to work on simultaneously on 4 different projects and learn how to use ansys and matlab. But it's interesting so I can't really complain.

I've just spent a night on watching demos, and there's still quite a bit to watch. I can give you some numbers

From a total of 1,14 GB of demos I have received so far I:

have rejected 453 MB
have given an ok to 218 MB
still have to watch 482 MB

I'm being strict and I've been rejecting a lot of stuff that any other movie maker would gladly accept. I really want to have some outstanding content in this movie, and I surely won't rush the release, I'll take my time to polish it up until I'm happy with it.

Tomorrow I'm heading back to uni, and I'll do my best to fit movie making somewhere in my daily schedule. As for today, I'll try to watch some more demos.

Few thoughts about frags

Since quakelive is offline right now I can't watch demos for the movie, I thought I'll write a bit about frags for movies.

While watching the submitted demos I noticed few things.

Nowadays when we watch a frag movie we want to see really good content. The frags should be unique and fresh, everyone is already bored by ztn plasma + rail spawn kills, dm6 'rail-jumppad' lg holds, etc. Also, the viewer is looking for kills that require skill, random spammed rocket that results in a mid air rocket isn't anywhere as good as a precisely landed one. Every-day, casual frags don't have a place in frag movies as well. We all know that.. Yet, for some reason, some players (and I'm not talking about only newbies but recognizable players also) don't seem to understand it.

Before submitting a frag, people should actually watch it one more time and ask themselves "Would I like to see a frag like this in a movie?". Everyone always approaches the content of frag movies in a critical way, everyone should look at their own frags in the same way.

You might be thinking that I'm asking for too much.. hell, maybe I do! But if you don't like it then submit your demos elsewhere, there's a bunch of beginners that would be more than happy to get to work on 'average movie quality' frags.

Heh, this post has such a negative feel to it. It's not like I've rejected all the demos I received, some of them are really nice.

If you've submitted some demos to me and you're wondering if they were rejected beforehand just e-mail me and I'll let you know.

Oh and btw, in the info post I mentioned that I'm looking for entertaining and dynamic frags. I had to reject some frags because they weren't dynamic enough but I'm sure some other movie maker would be very happy to work on them because they deserve to be in a movie, they just wouldn't fit in the one that I'm working on. So yeah as I wrote in the last paragraph just e-mail me. To be honest everyone who's submitted some demos should e-mail. Now let's see how many of you follows this blog and is actually interested how things are going, hah! My guess is none :)

Oh and btw 2, I had to reject some frags because they were used in other movies. I don't understand people that submit frags to many moviemakers at once. You could at least let me know! *cough*draven*cough*

Yeeeeah, finally I found some time and actually had the motivation to go through a part of the demos yall gave me so far. So yeah, today I watched 63 demos, out of these only 33 were labeled as OK. The rest was rejected, either because they were too average or were already used in another movie or weren't a quakelive demo at all (yeah really, wtf :D). It took a few hours to get through those demos, and my notebook didn't like it apparently.. even new its bottom is hot.. gotta buy a cooling mat or w/e it's called.

Oh yeah, and for those who are wondering: I'm still accepting demos. :) Right now I'm in the middle of the exam period but once it's over I'll have from 2 to 3 weeks of free time! yeeeh! And I'm planning to spend it on movie making mostly.

Damn, time sure flies! I have no idea when did this year pass by. Regarding my movie making the end of 2010 was pretty lazy, but that's ending right now, starting from January I'm reviewing all the demos I've received so far and start putting them together into a movie! If there's enough material that is. If not I'll be making a new post on ESR shortly.

Dayumn it's been months since I last posted anything about quake. Mostly because that during the last few months I totally lost interest in following quakelive events. The fact that ql doesn't run properly on my current setup was undoubtedly also played a role.

Anyway, yeah, for those who are wondering, I didn't dich this blog and no, I didn't stop thinking about movie making. I'm still collecting demos for my next project.

Yeah, as mentioned in my last post I was working on a short clip for my room mate, and really it's nothing special at all, in the end I didn't even use any effects from AE. Anyway, it was nice and refreshing to work on live footage, I'm planning to buy a camcorder, so expect more live footage videos. Oh btw I didn't record it, it was his sister afaik, shaky hands :))

Change the quality button to 480p, quality will blow otherwise.

By the way, I don't wanna brag but recently at uni they posted the list of best students on my year, and I'm 4th.... which is pretty damn awesome. I'll receive scholarship because of it, yay! \o/

huhu, again it's been a while since the last time I've posted, sorry about that :) Studies and student life occupy nearly all of my free time.

For anyone interested, I'm still accepting demos for my next project, actually I didn't get any recently.

I didn't start working on it yet though. But no worries, time isn't going to waste, right now I'm working on a short clip for my roommate, I'm using after effects to add some fancy stuff. It's pretty much the first serious time I'm using it and I'm learning tons. I'm especially interested in 3D effects and animations cause I want to use some of those in my next quake movie.

The short clip will be available on youtube, but not on my channel, I'll make a post when it's done and paste a link to it. It won't be anything spectacular though, so don't expect much. :)

Sorry for not posting anything for a while. I was away dealing with some university related stuff, everything went fine and now I'm back. :)
Concerning demos, I already received a couple, didn't have the time to go through them tho, but I recognized some names and I'm certain I won't be disappointed.

I'm thinking about finishing the stuff I wanted to do for the tek9 contest and release it as a minor project. I was thinking about making daily updates again, just like with afterspray, but this time I would really explain everything I do with details, talk about important stuff. It would be a kind of a movie making tutorial. I think it's a neat idea. What do you think guys?:)

So yeah, one after the great reception of afterspray, I'm not wasting time and I ask everyone to take a look at their demo folder and send me all you awesome frags / flag captures / quad runs, etc.
Keep in mind, that I'm very picky when it comes to gathering footage for my movies, so before you send me anything take a look at my previous frag movies and send me only better frags that you can see in those. Also, the frags have to be fresh and not featured in any movie.

Also, you need to watch the demo and write down the exact time of the frag (or period of time if it's a longer sequence) and then put it in the demo name or add a .txt file. I won't accept demos without times.

This movie will be different than most of the frag videos out there. Get ready for unusual music, that one might either love or hate. I also have a lot of neat ideas for this movie.

There's still plent of time to send me the demos, but please, don't hestitate. :)

tek9 movie contest upload period is over..

..and I didn't submit anything. After changing plans few times, in the end I didn't have much time left. I think they should change their stupid release rules next time, I'll make a forum post at tek9 later.

Looking at their ftp server I see at least 3 quake movies coming up:
- O.M.G._2_by_DisSidenT.rar
- The_Gate_Keepers_by_zeroql.rar
- Rebirth_by_grzesiek.rar (not 100% sure about this one)

Looking forward to these, especially zeroql's one. According to the contest schedule the video release period starts on September the 3rd and ends on the 17th.

afterspray - summary

Five days after releasing the movie, now that things calmed down, I'd like to sum everything up.

As I previously posted, the release exceeded my expectations by far. Which was a nice surprise =) Also, the majority of the comments were positive. At ESR the rating reached 8.3 with 175 votes (you can rate it from 0 to 10). On youtube it received 126 'likes' and only 3 'dislikes', also it was favourited 89 times. With all this said, I think it's safe to say that the video was received rather well.

Time for some stats, at the moment the video has 1034 downloads, over 10.000 views on YouTube and over 4.000 views on own3d.tv. 14.000 views is really a lot in such a short period of time and it's not all because I'm not counting views from different streams uploaded by other people.

It wouldn't get so much attention if it wouldn't be spread by people all over the world. It was posted on a lot of sites, initially I wanted to post links to all of them here but I realized it would take a lot of work :)

A nice thing is that my movie got to the featured movie page on own3d.tv (notice the most common typo that ppl do in my nickname)
Really nice to see something like that, although I'm not sure if it really increases the number of views significantly.

My movie also got some honours on YouTube, they're constantly changing and I'll probably make a post later when they'll improve (if they will :) ) Apart from that my profile got an award too "#85 - Most Viewed (This Week) - Poland". It will surely also change. We'll if it can get any higher. Also, if my memory works fine, a few days ago the profile award said something like #17 -most viewed (Today) - Poland, pretty cool. :)

I hope my future project will match the success of afterspray. We'll see about that. :)

Few words for clarification

Hah, I couldn't imagine a better release of afterspray, not even in my wildest dreams. It's a huge success and it only motivates me to work on further projects. I won't be going into details just yet, gonna release some numbers and charts tomorrow.

What I wanted to write in this post is a response to a couple of comments.

First of all, the title. I had a hard time with finding a good name for the movie. Some of you might heard the ESR's "I'm spraying cum everywhere!" (when for example a tourney is announced, or is drawing near). Later on Carmac, a well known ESL employee, used a modified version of the sentance in his ESR columns, for example "IEM European Championship - sprayworthy?" or "IEM World Championship - let's (s)pray". I thought it would be nice to name the movie in a similar fashion.

Next, fox name tag. Everyone thinks it's a dinosaur skeleton, when in fact it is supposed to be a upright fox skeleton. I found the original image with google, I was looking for a fox skeleton / skull. I really like the image and as I mentioned in the previous post - this name tag is my favourite.

Calipt, heh. That's a funny story as I already explained at ESR I didn't have an idea what to use as calipt's name tag, so I had a little chat with him on irc. He said that he likes wearing caps so a cap would be nice. So I googled it and a bunch of different caps showed up, I found this outstanding image and showed it to him as I found it funny, but I didn't thought about actually using it. He said he loves it and asked if I could photoshop his face into it and use it. And so I did ;)

Finally, over almost 6 months of work it's finished. Making this movie took A LOT of my free time, but it was fun, and it was worth it. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Daily update #23 - last update :)

The movie is done, as I'm typing this I'm rendering the whole thing. It will be released tomorrow in the afternoon. You might ask yourself, "why not now? Isn't it done yet?!". Well, yeah it's done, but first it has to render which takes about 1,5 of an hour, then I have to compress it, which takes 2 and a half of an hour. Afterwards I have to upload it, which takes quite a while, considering my upload rate is at pathetic 30 kbps. Also, I want to upload it to a couple of places before I release it. Also, I'm pretty sure that after rendering/compressing I'll find some detail that should be fixed. It might be something really, really small, but I'll still fix and re-render the whole thing. I can't wait to have this released. :)

edit, oh yeah, I almost forgot. Here's the final editor shot, and a second one where I made the tracks flat so you can see everything, :)

Ugh, movie isn't ready yet. Working on these name tags can be frustrating. First I work on an animation for an hour or so and then after rendering it I'm not happy about it at all.

That's why the movie isn't done yet. I could make half-assed name tags in a few minutes and release the movie even today, but I would feel very bad about it.

I hope I'll finalize everything tomorrow. Just a few name tags left after all. We'll see. Here's the current editor shot in the meanwhile.

Today the uploading period for the tek9 movie contest began. So there's almost a week to end the side project. And I'm not sure what to do as well. I'd have quite a lot of work to do if I want to pull the side project together on time. But then again, the iem4 movie isn't done yet. I wouldn't want to withdraw from the contest.. entering with the iem4 movie is also a possibility but I don't know if that's a good idea, especially because their weird release rules that I've mentioned about before. Also, my dad needs my helping hand everyday so free time slips away easily. All this makes me feel really uneasy. In the end I'll probably leave the contest and release the iem4 normally, as planned.

On a side note, apparently Han-Sai's ZeroQL, a really good movie maker, famous for his QL movie 'Unagi' and a couple of q3 titles has entered the contest. I can't wait to see his contest entry, also I wish him best of luck.

Due to an unexpected power outage last night I was unable to make a blog update.

Right now I'm designing / editing / adding names tags. It's a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to see comments about them.

When I rendered the movie last time I noticed a slow moment that interrupts the flow of the movie. It might be hard to fix it, but I'll try to figure something out. Apart from that, apparently I overlooked (overheard? :)) one audio file that still needs fixing. Adjusting it won't be troublesome tho.

Here's yesterday's editor shot. As you can notice, some new stuff appeared above the video clips, those are the mentioned name tags, when finished, they'll be all over the place ;)

Anyway, things are looking good and I expect to release the movie either this night or tomorrow. I'm going to post it simultaneously at the main Quakelive site, ESR and maybe some other community pages. I will upload it to youtube, own3d and a server for direct download of course. Also there will be some additional content posted here. So stay tuned! ;)

Again, a lot of work done. Tomorrow I'll add the name tags. I'm going to leave the laptop running and render the whole movie. If everything is alright I'll release the movie soon.

Here's today's editor shot. As you can see the movie is 5 minutes and 36 seconds long. Someone could say it's short, but I think it's fine, quality > quantity after all. :)

Jeez, another day of solid hard work. I'm silly tired again.

The frag part is pretty much put together. Still, some audio to fix, tweak this, change that. Gonna look for weaker parts of the vid for possible replacements.

When all frags will be in place, I'll start to add name tags, that will probably take a couple of hours, considering rendering previews and stuff like that.

Today I also started work on my side project for the tek9 contest. I gathered tons of resources, also started capturing some footage, I have a lot of neat ideas in my head, but I'm not sure how will I put everything together.. probably gonna think about it tomorrow. I also can't wait to get my hands on the quakecon demos. I hope they'll upload them soon, considering that the contest upload period starts in 3 days and lasts for a week .)

I want to finally finish all this stuff and take a break from movie making for a while. Sure, I have a new project in my head, and I'm already accepting demos for it, but I won't work on it right away. I'll probably start things a while after the end of holidays, when I'll be settled in the dorm again. And I'll probably finish around christmas, or so .) But yea, those are just speculations. We'll see how things go.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, here's the editor shot. There are some audio clips missing at the end. I'll fix that tomorrow.

Today, I didn't manage to do a lot. Re-recorded the clip that needed it, editted some ingame audio file so it fit the movie nicely. Right now, I'm rendering everything I did so far, to see if there's anything wrong.

A friend showed me his youtube channel with a custom background, that motivated me to make my own, right now it's just a temporary one, couldn't get myself to make something more fancy.

Also, I was goofying around with photoshop and made some funny stuff. Posted it on ESR. Plus magnet .)

No editor shot today, but tomorrow I'll do my best to make some progress in the frag part. Also, I'll probably finally start the side project for the tek9 contests.

Yesterday, I wasn't able to make a post because of the massive thunderstorm that was coming and going during the evening which eventually leaded to power outage in the night.

Because of the wheather I wasn't able to do a thing. The only notable thing I've made was measuring the time my sony vegas turns on. It takes almost 30 minutes, lol. Hardcore.

Today, the power went out a few times as well, they were probably fixing some power lines. But this time I made some significant progress, sorted out all the audio issues encountered so far. Also, I spent around 2 hours on fine polishing the intro, and it's done. It's nice and short. :)

I've also messed around with some frags, but didn't make a lot of progress there.

Time is slipping away and the tek9 contest deadline draws near. I have a lot of ideas in my head for the side project thingy and I'll do my best to make it in time, dunno if I'll make it tho. I'll probably use latest qcon demos as well so stay tuned. :)

Oh, yeah. Here's today's editor shot. Things are starting to look busy. At the same time, it's pretty clean, I really like this shot. :)

Today, I've made just a little progress. Recorded a clip for the intro transition again, hopefully it will do. Put a few frags together.

I was busy with other stuff today, like quakecon stream :> Also, finally my external HDD arrived so I was transfering some stuff on it - like 130GB, lol. Took like 4 hours or so. :D But yeah, space problems on my laptop solved. :)

Today I solved a performance issue which was slowing me down a lot. Because of that I was able to put a lot of stuff together! :)

So yeah, here's today's editor shot. A lot of new things, the 2nd half of the frag part is kind of messy, right now. I've put some long frags there that fit, later I'll work around them.

It appears that I'll have to re-record some in-game sounds, because their volume is too low.

Now that I have sorted out the performance issue, and if I'll maintain this tempo, I might be able to have the frag part done by Sunday. We'll see how things go. :)

Things are going slowly, I've rendered some previews of my footage to remind myself how the frags look like. (it's hard to playback 200fps .avi's)

Vegas is getting on my nerves. When I was working on some of my previous projects, I thought that it would be nice to work on high fps clips, so I could slow them down easily using vegas. But now when I've done it, it appears that it's eating up most of my pc resources. Vegas opens the project file for about 15 minutes, and the more clips I add to the project, the longer it takes.

No editor shot today, just added one frag, nothing special changed.

Tomorrow, I'll render more previews and probably gonna continue putting the frags together.

Sadly enough yesterday I didn't manage to make any progress at all. During the day I had to help my dad with something. In the evening there were some short power outages after the thunderstorm that coming and going for the whole day yesterday. In the night I was helping a few new players, teaching them the basics.

Yesterday, tek9 released the global intro for their latest "Sapphire movie contest". That means I'll soon start working on the side project that I will enter the contest with.

Anyway, apparently I'll have quite a bit of free time today, so I'll do my best to make up for the yesterday's lost time. :)

I've made quite a lot today.

Besides adding several frags, I've finally connected the intro with the frag part. In order to do it, I've recorded a short clip with a little help from 2 friends.

Also, to avoid confusion and errors while puttings the frags together, I've made an overview of my footage and I've used that to see the order of the clips I've already used. It's the first time I'm doing something like this in photoshop. (In my previous projects I'd usually print a screenshot of my footage folder and write down numbers with a pen) I really like the colours for each player. (the numbers at the bottom don't mean anything, I use them to mark the order on the frags)

At the end of the day I've rendered everything that I've made so far, I'm quite happy about the results, but there's still a couple of moments I'm going to improve.

Again, today I wasn't able to do much. Quakelive is unstable, kept on crashing. That's why I was able to only fix one out of two flawed clips. Besides that, I've added a mare single frag.

Once again, I didn't have time at all during the day and ended up working on the movie during the night. Also, because of QuakeLive downtime I was unable to make the 'intro-frag part transition'. I'll hopefully do that tomorrow, if the update won't mess up things, I'm a bit worried about demo playback on some maps..

Anyway, yeah - big news, big update. QL won't be beta anymore, they're introducing premium and pro accounts that aren't free of charge anymore. We'll see how things will work out.

Unfortunately, today, due to lack of time, I wasn't able to do much. I started messing around with the video in the late evening and damn, I forgot that putting frags together was so much fun :)

I only managed to lay down just a few frags but I really like what I've done so far.

I've done quite a bit today, pretty much got the intro ready, I've also rendered a short gameplay clip to check if everything is alright. I've sent it to a few trusted players to check if they can playback it properly.

After asking ESR members for their opinion, I've decided not to submit this movie for the tek9 contest, instead my entry will be a funny mix, I'm sure people will like it. :)

As promised here's the first daily update! Today, I've setup a good .veg (sony vegas file) for the video. Had to enter the right frame rate, resolution and stuff like that, pretty boring but it didn't take more than 10 minutes because I basically based it on the trailer one :)

Most of the work today I've spent on making a nice ESL logo animation for the intro bit. Luckily I found a high res version of the logo. I've put it into photoshop and seperated stuff into different layers, upper stripe, lower stripe, background and so on :) The outcome looks pretty decent, I'll probably fine polish it later on.

I also worked a bit on some name tags again, still a couple of players left.

Tomorrow, I'll probably make a "Hell5pawn videos" intro, with the usual no-life "room" :D Gotta think what to put on the monitor :) Cya tomorrow!

I'm done with demos. Today, I finally finished rendering lossless quality footage. My footage folder now contains 79 .avi files and uses 140 GB of my HDD. That's quite a lot, I'm not sure if I had this much for my previous projects. I won't use everything though, I think about 1/4 of those avi's won't make it to the final movie.

Few days ago I started working with photoshop, making name tags to be exact. It's a lot of fun :) I hope people will like them, there's a lot of variety, I don't want to follow one pattern.

A while ago I was thinking whether I'll use this movie for the current Tek9 contest or my next project. Now when there's about a month till the end of the contest, the question changes: Should I enter the contest with the IEM4 movie or should I withdraw. The worst thing about entering the tek9 contest would be the release, according to the rules I won't be able to upload the movie anywhere else before the voting/judging period is over.. which really sucks, because to download the movie, people would have to register at tek9 site. From experience (Zero) I know that people don't want to register at sites to vote/download.. I'll probably make a post at ESR and ask people if they would support me.

Oh, btw I'm planning to post daily updates of my work on the vid. Stay tuned! :)

Heh, to think that a while ago I said that the vid would be released by now.. I still haven't touched vegas (a video editing tool). Right now I'm watching/capturing footage from demos of players that didn't get through the world finals group stage (Chance, dkt, griffin, jibo, stermy, strenx). Since they didn't get to the playoffs they don't have many demos, so this will go fast.

Yesterday I've ran out of disk space, hah. Had to clean up to get additional 50 GB's but I'm not sure for how long will it last. Once I've captured all the footage I'll post some screens of my footage folder.

I wish I could already get to editing and putting everything together. Working with demos is such a pain.

A while ago I thought I had the soundtrack settled but now it seems that I'll use something completely different. We'll see how it works out :)

I don't remember whether I've mentioned it earlier but I've entered the NoGhost Mapping competition #2. Just for fun, I don't expect anything. There are about 2 weeks left, it ends before QuakeCon, because one of the sponsors (AMD/ATI) wants to use the maps in their booth. So yeah, not a lot of time left and I've done almost nothing :D Well, I've made some attempts but in the end I wasn't happy about them. Recently, I've sketched a layout for a duel map and I want to finish it before the deadline. I plan to make the design simple, yet nice. We'll see if I'll find the time. It will be my first map :)

Finally, holidays.

After a few days of delay and complete focus on reading a wicked manga called 'berserk' I'm back to work on the vid. As I write this post on my pc, on the laptop calipt is melting cypher with a plasma gun in slow motion as I render the lossless avi file. Today, along with my brother we've installed a new router and hence I finally have internet connection in both my PC and laptop.

Recently TEK9 announced another movie contest, it's not a mini movie contest like last time. Movie length must fit in between 3 and 7 minutes, rest of the rules do not differ from the usual tek9 set. I didn't sign up yet, but I surely will, but I'm not sure if I'll submit my currect project or rather the next one. As I posted before my next project will be a community movie. I already have the idea for the vid in my head, it will be a type of movie that you either love or hate. Soon I'll remind people about sending me the demos..

Alright, on my laptop calipt's plasma balls didn't leave much of cypher's body, time to get back to work!

Today I watched the whole Rapha's POV from the global finals, it took me about 2,5 of an hour. And there's nothing special about it, each pov takes me about the same amount of time. But this week I'll do my best to watch at least one POV per day. I'd like to have this stage of making the movie behind already and start some footage capturing / editing stuff, which is way more fun. Few days ago I've tweaked a nice movie config. I'm thinking about uploading a short video on youtube to demonstrate it.. hm, yeah possibly gonna do that this week.. maybe a short trailer? Who knows :)

Damn, watching demos is soo time consuming. I've spent the last two days just watching demos >.<.. Still 2 POV's (k1llsen and stermy) left to watch.. from the Euro finals! Then I have to watch the demos from the world finals.. Jeez. But well, some of the frags are enough to pay for my effort, haha.

Few days ago, my clan mate asked me if I'm getting paid for making this movie. heh. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind HAH, since I'm putting so much of my free time in this.. and what I'll get after the movie is done?.. cookies, hopefully. :)

I thought I'll finish the movie this month, but after watching all these demos I'm starting to have doubts. Maybe if I'd have some more motivation.. heh, that's why joining contests is good, even those a quake movie doesn't have a chance to win (read: tek9 contests). They give you a deadline, and it really motivates you to work..

Ages passed since my last post hah. I've been busy with uni and stuff. Didn't work on any vid really. But ha, yesterday I've ordered a new lenovo. It's a decent 15,4" lenovo with 500gb's of HDD. I'll use it to watch/capture footage when I'll have some free time at the dorm, and believe me or not I have tons of free time. :P So yeah, new movies soon :) First in the line is ESL IEM4 euro/world finals frag highlights. Damn, I can't wait to work on it. I know what music I'll use. It will rape!!

Just downloaded 257mb of demos from the IEM4 Global finals, uh. It's really a pain to download them one by one. If someone would be interested I might zip 'em all together and upload somewhere.

Again, a few demos were missing, some interesting ones too =/ oh well.

I'm not sure about adding demos from american and asian finals.. maybe if someone would watch those demos and write down the timing.. yeah that would be nice. Watching all those demos is so damn time consuming.. Especially since I have only time on the weekends, but that might change soon.

Lack of time is my main problem right now, most of my free time on weekends I spend on practice matches with my clan (bibs #3 around the corner). I still didn't watch the povs mentioned in the last post >.<.. If someone is willing to help me out by watching at least a few of the demos I'd be really grateful. Still watching demos.. It's taking longer then I thought it would. Additionally, I've been playing more CTF PCW's with my clan recently, we're getting ready for bibs season #3.

Still have to watch demos from av3k, calipt, fox, k1llsen and stermy.

Those demos do not contain too many outstanding frags, what makes me think about adding other continental finals to the movie. I'd add frags from the global finals as well, since they're starting soon.. hmm

Also, I'm still thinking about the music.. There's an awesome song on my mind all the time, but it was already used in a popular COD4 frag movie :/ I might also use some classical 'epic' music from Hans Zimmer.. or some electronics.. or idk really.. Maybe some suggestions?

My first movie :') Made on q3 1.16n. Features my freezerail clan. The xvid version is huge(600mb), that was my first attempt with compression and I didn't know much about it.. Luckily my clan mate made a x264 version from the xvid one. Quality drops a bit but the size is much smaller(200mb).

New movie - seventeen

Almost a week ago my latest movie for the tek9 minivideo contest was released. It's called seventeen. It's a one map video with midair rockets only. Unlike 'Zero' I didn't use any colour correction as well as no motion blur. If you like it, register @ tek-9.org and rate it :) After the community voting is over I'll upload it to youtube and add a download mirror from Maverick.

Didn't have time since last weekend to post anything. A lot of exams and stuff @ uni, luckily so far everything related to uni goes great. :)

Last weekend I've managed to upload the vid yey! Today the tek9 staff updated the 'video release rules' so that starting from tomorrow, they will release 10 videos per day. Which means I have no idea when exactly everyone will be able to see it! Within 2 weeks that's for sure (over 100 vids)

I've signed up for some QL duel cups recently:

Today I managed to play and win my first game in the second one. It's a tourney reserved for polish players. Tomorrow I'll have my next match, this time it won't be so easy ;)
I'll also do my best to play a few matches from the ESR league, so yeah some crazy duel action this weekend :)

Damn, weekends are waaaaaay to short.. Time is flying and my minivideo isn't done yet, too many distractions :/ I wanted to finish it this weekend but it's quite far from being ready and I'm leaving to uni in about an hour.. Next weekend is the last chance to upload so I'll have to finish it then.. I hope I'll make it in time.. and I hope I won't have any problems with uploading, my internet connection has a crappy upload rate, additionally my connection got all wacky after christmas :/ Stupid provider ::/

Heh, while rendering the alpha vegas crashed a few times, always in the same point of vid, had to remove it for now.. pretty gay since I've spent few hours on that part yesterday.. gonna try to fix today. Vegas never crashed while my previous projects..

Free time!

Yesterday I got home and I'm not leavin' till like 3-4 of January :) But I don't have time to rest, without wasting time I'm starting to write map reviews today and I'll probably finish them today to start making my minivideo!

Today tek9 will release a signup list for the contest. Three days ago they gave everyone a sneak peak, showing the number of registered participants along with the games they will be working on.
I'll post something once the list is released.

Busy December

December just started and it looks like I'll have plenty of work. First there's the Maverick Servers Mapping Contest where I am one of the judges. I'm really excited about it because I've seen some beta versions and teasers and believe me or not, it will be hot :D I'll post more info about the contest later on. Other then that, 2 days ago TEK9 announced a new video contest. I've participated in the last one, Zero being my submission. This time it's a mini video contest sponsored by AMD. The rules say that the video should be from 60 up to 90 seconds long. I already have millions of ideas in my head :) Thank god I won't have any exams in uni this month ;)

Oh, btw few days ago my friend showed me a great game! It's called isketch and it's A LOT of fun! Especially if you're playing with your friends. Check it out! :)

A bit about me

Well, I guess I should actually write something about myself..

I'm an average guy! Atm I'm 19 years old. I study Mechanics and Construction of Machines at the 'Technical University of Koszalin' and I live in the local students' hostel. MMmm.. interests.. Music! I like various types of music, but I'll name a few of my favourites.. The Prodigy, Pendulum and the Bloodhound Gang ..hahah. I often go to the local clubs to enjoy the music and dance :) Apart from that, I like watching movies, but I don't watch TV too often. I listen to the radio much more.. I don't read books! I'm too lazy :(

And now the other side of me, the dark gaming side! rofl! I've started playing online few years ago. I always liked quake. Started off with Q3ADemo, met some really cool guys there on the NoGhost servers and I didn't want to leave them so I upgraded to Q3 1.16n and I am still there! Playing FreezeRail with my clan mates. Over a year ago when QuakeLive was released (in that time closed beta). It was love at first sight :) So yeah, atm I have 2 clans, Shadow Railers in Q3 1.16n and Pussies in QuakeLive. Both games are tons of fun!
I'm also a decent movie maker, you can watch all of them on my youtube account. I have 2 movies in my head right now, both of them are QL vids. Too bad these days I don't have much time because of uni, but I'll surely make those vids sooner or later! I can't wait to start working on them :)
